Being the sad person I am, I am always fascinated by little gems like this - I might put that in my next quiz night as a teaser!
By the way, no-one has mentioned the pronounciation of mush - the mush to which I refer is "Moosh" rather than "Muhsh" .
It is what we do to peas!
A mush is meal, especially cornmeal, boiled in water or milk until thick; anything pulpy; sloppy sentimentality; rubbish; background noise from a wireless receiver; or an umbrella.
A mushmouth is a person who slurs or mumbles in speaking.
To mush is to travel with dogs over snow, or a command to dogs to start moving faster, as jno says, (probably from the French marcher - to walk).
You take your choice!
Sorry, my mistake, its the closing song:
We've got some half price cracked ice and miles and miles of carpet tiles,
T.V.s, deep freeze and David Bowie L.P.s,
Ball games, gold chains, whatsnames, pictures frames and leather goods,
And Trevor Francis track suits from a mush in Shepherds Bush,
Bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush ...
No income tax, no V.A.T.,
No money back, no guarantee,
Black or white, rich or poor,
We'll cut prices at a stroke......
God bless Hooky Street,
Viva Hooky Street,
Long live Hooky Street,
C'est magnifique, Hooky Street,
Magnifique, Hooky Street,
