A 'Jack-the-lad' is a brash, perhaps careless and irresponsible person.
a showoff, anyone particularly pleased with themself and keen to ensure that everyone knows it. ref dictionary of slang
Jack the... dates back to Victorian times when the word Jack was simply used to describe a man. I.e Jack the lad, Jack the ripper, Jack frost, Jack in the box etc..
