Just idly wondering here .... does the word penis get ******* out like the word ****? Or is it accepted, and if so what is the difference, when it means the same thing?

the difference is tone of voice. One is used in polite society, one is not (actually, I'm not sure which **** you have in mind, of course).

One is a medical term; the other is slang.

EssJay is right. In fact it's more than slang, it's still widely regarded as offensive, just as some terms for sex are and some aren't. They 'mean' the same thing but they aren't used the same way.
