I think it means either "Lots of laughs" or "Laughing out loud!" in reply to something somebody has typed which they thought was funny.

As an addition to gazzawazza's answer I have heard that lol is "Lots Of Laughs" and LOL is "Laugh Out Loud" - like a bigger laugh!

when one of my chidren was off travelling the world we would chat on line. She would sign off with Love you miss you or similar and I would sign off LOL xxx. I meant lots of love and fortunately she realised that and put me straight.
