Why don't people (especially text messengers) make more use of the @ sign? There are plenty of places it could be used: h@, c@, f@ Or do people use it and I am acting like a tw@?

I would say from personal experience that it is probably because the @ sign is hidden away on most phones, and at is only one letter more than @ it is much quicker to type at. There you go!
