What does Van-Winkled mean?

I am currently reading the book The Magic Cottage by James Herbert and on p196 it is on about Midge (the woman being asleep. Mike tries to wake her but 'she was really van-Winkled'.. I am not familiar with this saying.. Can anyone shed any light.. I tried to think of ne obviouse cockney slang but nothing has sprung to mind... Thanx..

From Rip van Winkle, who fell asleep for 20 years - a short story by Washington Irving. I'd guess this means that Midge was sleeping very deeply.
