cannoli?
7 Answers
so, who can tell me, please, what is a cannoli? as in the Godfather:
"Take the gun and leave the Cannoli!"
this is a gilmorism in fact as I am too chicken to watch the godfather. But I would really really like to know why it is funny and also the context of the line in the movie. Then I might clear up the only gilmorism I've never got.
many thanks in advance.

Long time since I watched The Godfather but I think it's the bit where they drive out somewhere and they are under orders from the Don that only one of them will come back. Clemenza gets out of the car and has to relieve himself and then the guy in the back shoots the driver in the back of the head.
But Clemenza's a family man and he remembers he has said he would bring a desert home for supper . He says leave the gun and take the Canoli. In other words he is more worried about what his wife will say when he turns up sans desert than the fact that they have just put a bullet in someones head.

You should watch it Mimi ..it's tame compared to some of the stuff they dish out now and the music is lovely. I remember going to see it in the cinema and screeching when he peeled back the bedcovers to reveal the horses head !!
But it's worth it for the young and handsome Al Pacino and Robert Duval !!
You have a nice Christmas too ..all the best xxx

But... anyone with a name ending in vowel would certainly be offended at having the luscious cannoli described as a cake! Uffa! It's a thin, crispy, rolled and deep fried delicacy filled with a ricotta cheese mixture... Cu li disprezza un gran curnutu aff! As seen here: http://www.mikespastry.com/Merchant2/merchant. mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=CANN OLIRICOTTA10CT&Category_Code=PAS
It's sometimes filled with other things and sometimes used as main dish but most often as a dessert....

well, now everything Italian is cleared up (thanks to you, you guys!), I have re-watched the episode of the Gilmore girls with the reference and the joke was, indeed, in true gilmore fasion, very funny indeed.
thanks guys and I'm renting the GF's on the weekend for an instalment into my classic movie/popculture account.
