Is there a term to describe brandnames which have become common words eg "xerox"

This is an interesting question. The term proprietary is applied to company trade marks. e.g. Hoover is a proprietary name for a vacuum cleaner. When a medicine (eg) has no trade mark it is called a generic. So I guess that Hoover became a generic name for vacuum cleaners, Sellotape for adhesive tape etc. Anybody else any ideas?
