Last of the big Spenders
4 Answers
I always thought that term meant that you were a big spender. Like say you bought a big round at the pub or splashed out and got a new car or whatever, people would say 'ohhhh last of the big spenders'. My mate recently told his girlfriend that she was the last of the big spenders after she bought him dinner. She took complete offence to it thinking it meant she was tight fisted. Is she right or wrong.
By the way, anyone know where the term comes from?

A couple of example are - - -
"Chelsea have so far spent 34million. In one 12-month period Ferguson spent 77m on three players, one of whom, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has been a triumph, and another, Juan Sebastian Veron, a disaster. As for Rio Ferdinand, the jury is still out.
So it's Ferguson who's the last of the big spenders, not Roman Abramovich."
and
"Is Peter Costello about to become the last of the big spenders?
After five years aiming for fiscal rectitude, Mr Costello's Cabinet colleague Amanda Vanstone is now promising an enormous spend into Tuesday's Budget. The Family and Community Services' Minister says the spending will be on welfare reforms."
So it would appear to me that it is not meant in a sarcastic term but in a way that means thay don't mind spending a few quid....
