It is a potato dumpling. I believe this food is Italian in origin... I'll double-check with my mother for you, she will know for sure!!! I boil them and eat them with spaghetti sauce. They are somewhat more flavourful than pasta, somewhat less flavourful than ravioli, but I like them!!
Yes-- Italian-- she says. Also, I meant, more flavourful than plain pasta... less flavourful than something like cheese ravioli. But I do really like them a lot!

Only the most gorgeous Italian dish ever created! Little potato dumplings usually served in a tomato sauce. The best place in the world for Gnocchi is at a little restaurant called Leon D'Oro in the Italian resort of Riva del Gardo on the northern shore of Lake Garda. Quite simply - fantastic!
Another AB user had typed in an answer which has since been deleted (thank goodness, because it was incorrect!!) saying that gnocchi are made with semolina. He was wrong... I have a box here that I just bought at the grocery store. The ingredients are: "mashed potatoes, potato starch, wheat flour, salt, sorbic acid (as a preservative), and citric acid". No mention of semolina, because there isn't any!!! Sorry to bother you, I just wanted the truth to be known.
