It refers to the belief that, after seven years of marriage, the bloom has worn off the relationship and the partners begin to get an 'itch' to be trying to create other - perhaps adulterous- relationships. It was the title of one of Marilyn Monroe's most delightful movies and showed the temptations a man faced as her neighbour when his family had left town for the summer. See it!
It's based on the premise that after seven years, the couple may have children, a morgage, secure jobs, and all the standard ingredients that make a man feel past his youth, and keen to see if he can still secure the friendship of an attractive member of the opposite sex.
