Are you sure you have the all the right letters? This doesn't solve for any ONE word though there is the beginning of xylo..in there somewhere could there be more?

XYLORIMBA. It's an extended xylophone combining the musical ranges of the xylophone and the marimba. Sft obviously had the right idea but not the right dictionary! Luckily, I have Chambers by my side, 'cos I'd never heard of it either.

Thank you quizmonster. I have been trying all sorts of combinations but as I have never heard of this instrument I would never have got it! Chambers is always a good source of reference but I haven't got it either! Thanks also to Std. for trying to help. We've both learned something today. Cheers.
