Schadenfreude . It means "Malicious enjoyment of another's misfortune". Why we have no English word for it ( if we don't ) who knows? The word 'gloating' is pretty close to it though..

I knew the answer to that one. I learnt it from an episode of the Simpsons!
Shameful joy? . The German is from two words which don't themselves suggest any guilt . Ah, these Germans and their language! Schaden means harm and Freude means joy. Now I think about it, masochism is from an Austrian novelist's name; he described it in some detail. Seems like a variant of the concept :)
