laking is an old yorkshire term for playing//my mates used to call at my house and my ma iff i was laking out/also when a person has time off work for no reason they are said to be laking
When I was a nipper growing up in Lancashire my Grandma would say "What yer laking at" if I was dilly dallying while walking.

Thankyou 'i' & 'M' another source said "Playful" so that has cleared it up for me.

We in the south thought it may be from the North. lol
I think in most glossaries of dialect words it's "laiking"; it is indeed from west of the Pennines and means timewasting or dawdling.
It is not just west of the Pennines.
It is also used in several areas in God's Own Country(Yorkshire), and means playing, messing about, etc.
Sportsmen are described as good laikers.
Thanks for that info, nightmare. My grandfather came from Keighley, and I never heard him use the word; I've only come across it in use in south Lancashire and the Cheshire plain. I'm quite prepared, however, to accept that it does exist on the "proper" side of the Pennines!
As all correspondants have shown it refers to playing or dawdeling. I believe it's a corruption of larking, as in "larking about"
