well, that's because you're a smoker by choice, stewey, whereas you aren't an east European or a black by choice. And being black doesn't kill other people slowly and painfully, unlike smoking. Apparently a million Chinese die of smoking every year, and 10% of them - that's 100,000 - die of passive smoking.

Jno, I am a non-smoker. My point was that why is is perfectly alright to call one type of minority all kinds of disparaging terms, and yet to refer to other minorities with demeaning epithets is considered to be not 'politically correct'? (hate that term!). My postulation has nothing whatsoever to do with Chinese statistics, or detrimental effects of smoking amongst smokers or non-smokers. I am simply wondering why it's now considered trendy and perfectly fashionable and correct to absolutely crucify smokers.

Hi Stewey, when all of the smokers are gone who will we pick on next? I do agree with you,I was rushed into hospital a while ago and one of the first question in A & E was did I smoke.Nobody asked if I drank,did dangerous sports, drugs or sword swallowing.As to the original question- perhaps a smog of smokers.

like mehlindi says and like I said, stewey, you can pick on people for their choices but not for things they have no choice in. When they choose to exercise a habit that kills innocent bystanders, they deserve to be picked on. When the smokers are gone, and we all hold a big party and sing songs of praise, we can then revert to hating paedophiles, like now, wired. As for the hospital asking you if you smoked, maybe it's because they didn't want you doing it next to anyone else. You can swallow all the swords you want when you're in the next bed to me, they'll do you more good than hospital dinners.

Well you sound like a right giggle Jno....I suggest you have a read of 'Panic Nation', especially the chapter on passive smoking, you might find life gets a bit more enjoyable for you and you become slightly less bigoted. Some of you are not understanding what I am writing about. Perhaps it's my fault; maybe I'm not explaining my position clearly enough. I am not discussing smokers and their resultant damage to themselves and others. Rather, I am talking about smokers as a minority and asking why it is perfectly ok to hurl insults at them with impunity. Some of you state that because smokers choose to smoke they deserve whatever they get. If that is your stance, how about the following short list of people who choose to do certain things:

1. People who choose to move to the UK with no skills or trade and demand instant benefits.
2. Single mothers who choose to have multiple pregnancies and insist upon the state paying for their off-spring.
3. People who choose not to work and feel that the state owes them a living and a council-house.
4. People who choose to lead a life of crime but that's ok because it's society's fault that this happened to them.
5. People who choose to abuse alcohol and/or drugs but that's ok because we have numerous programmes, benefits, institutions, etc to help them out.

Now my point is that all of the above are minorities, and the people in those groups have chosen to do as they do. All of their actions directly affect society, and yet if we pick on any of them we are classed as being a racist, or a bigot, or as being too harsh or insensitive, or as having no feeling towards our fellow men. Some threads on AB have even been zapped because people were being openly hostile towards some of the above!.....................but it's perfectly alright to refer to a smoker as a 'left-over piece of puke"........................That was my point.

I cannot believe the respnses to my innocent question, I wished to know of any phrases relating to a group of smokers because I heard somebody on a radio show describe them in an amusing way, which I have now forgotten, I thought posting on here may provide me with the answer, instead I have been inundated with replies from seemingly right and left wing fundamentalists. Remember I posted this under "phrases and sayings" so if anyone has an amusing description I would be grateful

It cannot be compared to race, gender, disability and so on. There is no choice element there.

There is nothing sexy about puffing and panting during sex because your lungs are clogged, and that early morning hacking cough is a real turn-off.

There's no fun in sitting through a film in the cinema, or on an aeroplane climbing the walls because you are desperate for a smoke.

I don't smoke anymore - and have a lot more fun. I enjoy a drink, lots of exercise and food. I am a lot more relaxed and I have more money in my pocket to spend on fun things.

isnt it funny how smokers never really minded the insults when they were allowed to smoke indoors? now they have to suffer from the cold etc, all of a sudden its the non-smokers who are the 'evil' ones! in answer to the original question i think the "Puff of smokers" or "Puffs" ones already mentioned are the best so far!

Reading this thread I tend to agree with Stewey

A few people have said "you can pick on people for their choices but not for things they have no choice in" - Everybody has the choice who they sleep with so why can't we slag off gays and lesbians?

Some people say that it's because you are killing other people 'passive smoking' and all that - what about all the car drivers in the world poluting the atmosphere and slowly killing people?

I still firmly believe that the most discriminated against people are 'Single White Hetrosexual Males' - Everyone else gets preferential treatment or we have to tip toe around them to pretect their sensitive feelings but where's our support group???
