Something seems to be wrong with the link I provided above. Basically, "Gently, Bentley!" was a catchphrase of Jimmy Edwards, a radio/TV comedian in the 1950s/60s and referred to his sidekick, Richard Bentley. (He was never called 'Richard', but I suspect the shortened version of that name may not be accepted here!)
