I have always understood it to mean that free or promotional tickets will not be accepted whilst the "free list is suspended". I guess they do it when there is a big new film on show so they don't want anybody using their freebies!
That's my understanding as well - local flim critic usually have passes, but these are not available when the 'free list' is suspended, usually for really high-demand films like 'Lord Of The Rings' - it is seen as unfair that some people are assured of a free-seat while paying customers can't get in.
yeah, that's what it is. a load fo my friends used to work in a bowling alley, cinema complex and could see films for free, except those for which the free list was suspended - mainly the big hollywood blockbusters on their first week or two fo release.

i don't know if the cinema sees it as being unfair that some people are assured a seat for free - i think they know they've got a better chance of selling out for the big films and therefore they can make more money!
