How did the phrase 'see you later alligator' come about?

The word, 'alligator', was used as long ago as the 1930s in American slang to mean a fan of 'swing' music. It then reappeared in the mid 1950s as part of a song - by Bill Haley and the Comets, if memory serves me correctly - in the lines: "See you later, alligator...In a while, crocodile."
