Everybody and everything nowadays seems to be described as 'devastated'.

What words have we lost to describe personal disappointment, tragedy and loss?

Shocked, overwhelmed, desolated, disconcerted, nonplussed, traumatised, stunned...and so on.
I hear the word 'gobsmacked' used (far too often) in the same context.
well gutted! (don't pronounce the t)
I have an elderly aunt who uses the word 'heartbroken' for everything.
She was heartbroken when her husband died (understandably) but was also heartbroken when she recently left a packet of mints on a shop counter!

I used to go out with a fisherman and when he dumped me I was gutted..............(note the little pun there)
