Why do many pubs have the word 'arms' in their name, eg. The King's Arms, The Macclesfield Arms', etc?

for a helpful website. Basically, the idea was that the original inn was under the protection of a particular noble family or referred to the original landowner. 'Arms' here, of course, refers to the appropriate 'coat of arms'.

Thank you as ever, Quizzy. Yes, it seems obvious when I think about it really.
Years ago, there used to be a bar in Glasgow called the "Muscular Arms".
The Man At Arms. another pub
Blacksmiths Forearms
Up where i stay theres a pub called the Gairdners Airms lol but that Glasgow for you, (thats slang for Gardners Arms by the way) :p
