One meaning is On Target Earnings which are usually achieved by a small basic salary and the remainder coming from commission on sales. Problem, is, if you turn out to be 'off target' you get shown the door.

Andy may well be right; but I've always thought it simply meant "or the equivalent" and referred to part of the remuneration being in the form of perks such as a car, health insurance etc.

I have always known OTE to stand for On Target Earnings, it is used for jobs in sales or other jobs taht are dependant on commission or bonuses. It is a good guide to what you will expect to earn. I am a manager in a sales environment and most companies do not sack somebody for missing their target once. But if you never achieve your target - then watch out
