In the Victorian era,a man could invite a woman to "look at his etchings". Was this merely a euphemism?

Just as with the more recent: "Would you like to come up for a coffee?", the 'etchings' invitation was a socially acceptable way of inviting a lady into one's web for naughty purposes.
