Apparently named after the American boxer John L. Sullivan (1858-1918), who first wore the style of legging in in the ring. Sullivan was one of the great early boxers, the link between bare knuckles and glove fighting, and the first great American sports idol. He is considered still by some to be one of the best heavyweights ever, being elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
