Punctuate this . . . . "James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher."

Answer: James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.
There's always the manager of Crosse & Blackwell's factory who had the company's signboard repainted. When the decorator reported that he's finished, the manager went out to have a look at his work. "Oh, no," he said, "you haven't left enough space between 'Crosse' and 'and' and 'and' and 'Blackwell'!"

Surely you have encountered the somewhat contrived extension, regarding the sign of a company called Holland and Anderson Ltd., in which case, the "and" at the end of Holland and the "And" at the beginning of Anderson can be utilised to give a sentence in which the three letters AND are used thirteen times consecutively ?
"What's the matter with the cat?"

It's its paw."

Thanks for the replies. Sir prize, is the first paragraph without the punctuation a valid sentence? In the punctuated version should there be a fullstop after the seventh 'had'.
No, I've never seen that version, Nightmare, and it is, as you say, contrived. The letters a, n and d at the end of Holland and at the start of Anderson are not, in fact 'words', as stipulated by the questioner.

Johnny, a full stop is not essential there...the semi-colon, as provided by Sir.prize, is quite adequate.
