I honestly don't know, and I am not from Yorkshire, but could it be the scraps you get from chips shops (bits of batter, small chips etc). I know in the old days you could ask for that when you couldn't afford a proper bag of chips.

my husbans says... when he was young they had a machine which chopped up mangle worzels (apologise for spelling) for sheep and they were bag of mashing. Mangle worzel chips (raw) for sheep. I accept no responsibility LOL

when I used to visit my gran in Wales as a kid, they used to call the chippy scrap bits "chittlings" you could get a penny's worth in a paper bag, very greasy but as kids we loved them.

A 'mashing' is the name given to the process of mixing malt and warm water to create wort as part of the brewing process. I'm not sure how you would get that into a bag, though perhaps the useless residue left after the process is completed might be so treated. My guess, therefore, is that 'a bag of mashings' means anything pretty useless...along the lines of 'a load of rubbish'.
Would that fit in the context in which you heard the phrase, Parfitt?

Interesting. A search on Google shows examples of two different uses for the phrase, judged by context. One could be substituted with 'the whole shebang', and the other with 'a kettle of fish'.
