Why is it said to be unlucky to have birds in the house?

The superstition refers only to wild birds and the belief was that they were an omen of an upcoming death in the home.

QM's wild birds will be desperate to get out, and in their anxiety will poop everywhere!

I don't doubt it, H, but - when this superstition first got going, pretty well everything was probably covered in carp (deliberate mis-spelling) anyway! Something rather more significant must have been involved, I'm sure.
