I always thought it had a sexual conatation to it because of a song (by Lynard Skynard or Allman Bros?) in which the lyrics were 'really love your peaches (boobs?), wanna shake your tree'

I think before that, it meant pester as in "if you don't like my apples, don't shake my tree. I'm not after your boyfriend, he's after me."
