Does anyone know a saying something like, History teaches us a lesson so that we don't make the same error again.

Sorry, I was remembering the second one from (fallible) memory - it should be "A generation which ignores history has no past and no future."

Hammond Eggs' version above is the closest to Santayana's original (from 'The Life of Reason' ): "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
I've always believed that those who do not study history are condemned to study geography (that's how it was at my school anyway).
