It is a Latin phrase, and means "amongst other" in the feminine singular. For masculine singular, use "inter alius". The same construction applies to the form "et al." (the use of a full stop is correct); it means "and other", thus: "et alius" (masculine), "et alia" (feminine), "et alii" (masuline plural, I think...), and "et ali�" (feminine plural, I think...?). There are also singular and plural forms for the two expressions, but I cannot remember them... :o(
