Some people reckon the alley-alley-oh is the Manchester Ship Canal, others that it's nonsence and represents a child's viewpoint of the sea.

For a second opinion I sent an email to the Greater Manchester County Records Office, who replied, "We have been asked this question before and did look into it indepth in 1997. There is no evidence the rhyme refers to the Ship Canal. No one can even date when it was first quoted and what it means." So I guess I'm wrong :-)
