Apparently American Indians often gave white settlers presents then took them back at a later stage, so the settlers coined the phrase "Indian giver". However, it is believed the settlers didn't realise the Indians were only loaning the items, not giving them. It is now used as a derogatory term.
The Indians had no idea of Personal property. everyone used what was there.
