What does it mean?

It was in the film 'The Three Musketeers', and said by D'Artagnan, Aramis, Athos, Porthos, when they defending fought to defend the King Louis of France from Cardinal Richelieu. The original version was made in 1973, and stared Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Richard Chamberlain, Michael York, Frank Finlay, Christopher Lee. A later version was made in 1993, staring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry and Rebecca De Mornay. Disney has also produced an animated version.

Hope you don't take offence lindyloo but as Alexandre Dumas is too dead to defend himself... before all those lovely films (I'm a big fan of the 'mouseketeers' myself) there was actually one of those old-fashioned things we call a book! The Three Musketeers was published in Paris in 1844. The phrase is meant as an oath of loyalty - to protect each other.
