come from and what does it mean ??

It means having been born into a rich / wealthy family.

The phrase comes from the custom of the godparents giving the child a silver spoon at the christening.

I understood that it was from the solid silver nipple protectors that the Victorians used when wet nursing. According to Bargain Hunt last week that had such an item for sale, the explanation of the saying was such!
