I once had a boss who said this all the time. I've heard "now we're cooking," and "now we're cooking with gas," but he would say "now we're cooking in tall cotton." Did he make this up?

No, he didn't.  It's a common expression in the American South, making reference to wealthy plantation owners who grew acres of cotton.  "Walking in tall cotton" implies extreme wealth, good luck or fortune.

Oh yeah, walking in tall cotton sounds familiar. So was he getting his expressions mixed up?
Its also shi- - ing in high cotton..  Thinking no one can touch you, like you are so far ahead..
