How do you know if someone is a Professor? What letters would they have after their name?

As far as I know they would be Prof. Smith rather than have letters after their name.
They would have a pointy head.
A professor at a major university would probably have a Ph.D. in some branch of arts or sciences. But a Ph.D. certainly doesn't guarantee anyone a job as a professor! Other kinds of schools may have professors or lecturers with lesser degrees. Some particular kind of specialty, especially in medicine or law, would have a degree with a different name specific to that field.

In France all teachers called Professor.

Therefore needto be caref ul what nation(ality) you are talking about.

Get a teaching job in Italy. Every secondary school teacher is adressed as "professori".

You don't.

The top man in a university department could be a senior lecturer. A bigger department would be more likely to have a professor.
