Where did the term/saying, 'went missing' originate. As in, The soldier went missing on Monday.

'went missing', is not a term or saying - it is merely a statement of fact- the soldier is missing, he went away
Went missing = we don't know what transpired.  Soldiers were often reported as 'missing in action- presumably killed'.  In ordinary parlance it means 'we haven't a clue what became of him/her/it, but fear the worst.
