Is the word kitchen derived from another word?  This is a question that I asked my teacher when I was 6 and she couldn't answer...thought it was about time I found out!

Most directly from Old English 'cycene' which itself derived from Latin 'coquina' and 'coquere'.
POssibly more from a Germanic root than Latin? Kuchen in modern german sounds v like Kitchen

No, it's definitely from Latin. In Old High German - more or less contemporaneous with Old English - 'kitchen' was 'chuhhina' and it did not take on the hard 'c/k' sound of 'Kche' until later. The 'c' of Latin 'coquina' and 'coquere' was already hard, as was the opening 'c' of Old English 'cycene'.

It looks to me awfully as if both Germanic and English versions owe their source to the Latin.

simms - the Germanic word kocina (and later Kche) probably came from the (Vulgar) Latin cocina (as a variant of the Latin coquina (both meaning "to cook") as Quizmonster correctly points out).

Good Lord! Where have you been, Indie? You are being sought somewhere in the midst of the weeping and wailing on the 'Suggestions' category. Whatever...good to see you back.
Hi again Quizmonster :) Where have I been? Slightly angry at this site! And busy with uni of course... Nice to be missed, though!
Welcome back Indie.
