Where does the term DT's come from regarding the shakes, etc after a hard nights drinking?

Delirium Tremens, from Latin meaning trembling and a disturbed state of mind. It is induced in alcohol dependent people when they are deprived of booze.

Also in a strictly medical sense,it describes alcohol psychosis in which the sufferer has hallucinations.

post binge shakes are not really DTs

Answer 2 is more accurate for DTs. Apparently the hallucinations feature creepy crawly animals and the patient can describe them so accurately that other people get involved or drawn into the hallucinations (but dont actually see them themselves)
