taters in th mould?

when it's cold, a cor blimey luv a duck cockney friend of mine says it's "taters" (pronounced TAY-TERS). he says it's rhyming slang for "taters in the mould(mold?)". looked on here and it says it's "potatoes in the mold" but i wish to know why this phrase? cheers gang!

Sorry, should have done all of them in one.....! Mold meaning earth, tayters in the earth/ dirt, mold = cold, etc. Why doesn't he just say "Blimey mate it's cold today?" And we'd all know what he meant.
