when it's cold, a cor blimey luv a duck cockney friend of mine says it's "taters" (pronounced TAY-TERS). he says it's rhyming slang for "taters in the mould(mold?)". looked on here and it says it's "potatoes in the mold" but i wish to know why this phrase? cheers gang!

Tayters is just a shortened form of potatoes

Sorry, should have done all of them in one.....!  Mold meaning earth, tayters in the earth/ dirt, mold = cold, etc.  Why doesn't he just say "Blimey mate it's cold today?"  And we'd all know what he meant.

It's in common usage in the rural parts of herts. As other have said, it is rhyming slang for cold
