Many years ago in my college days, we were hanging out with friends at someone's home, when someone asked me to pass her the "afghan". This puzzled me, as I didn't know what she meant, which was the throw  on the sofa. The girl was surprised of my ignorance, not knowing what an "afghan" meant. But surely "afghan" can mean many things - rug, blanket etc.

Or is "afghan" a generic term?

Apart from a native of Afghanistan, the word 'Afghan' can be applied to a type of crocheted blanket, a type of sheepskin coat, a type of coarsely-woven rug and a type of dog. The reason is simply that the original versions of each of these types came from Afghanistan.

And to you, D.A.
Once when I was a girl, a lost dog wandered past our house. It was a beautiful Afghan hound, obviously a cared-for pet, but I'd never seen it in the neighborhood before. I called to my mother, "Look, there's an Afghan in the front yard!" She replied, "Well, fold it up and bring it in!"
And did you?
