A "tag", a piece of cardboard is attached to the item (usually clothing) with the new "sale" price which overrides the previously attached price...
In some areas of the US, a "tag sale" is the same thing as a yard sale or garage sale...I think similar to a jumble sale in the UK - people sell used or donated items at very low prices.
Sorry, Clanad, I've never heard that. Some stores hold "red tag" sales or "blue dot" sales or use other such names for markdown prices when they use a sticker to indicate on the price tag that a standard discount will be applied at the register.

But as Ouisch says, a tag sale is a yard sale or garage sale -- held at a person's home.

What you call jumble sales in UK, we call rummage sales -- many people donate to a church, a school choir, or other organization, which runs a great big tag sale as a fundraiser for its worthy activities.

Where I live (East Coast USA) a tag sale is sort of like an estate sale....in a yard sale, you sell what you don't want. In a tag sale, everything in the house is for sale.
