It is possible that this saying stems from the physical characteristics of many aristocrats in England who could speak without moving their upper lips. Another theory has it that an American, John Neal, wrote a poem after visiting Britain called Down Easters and in it he wrote: 'What's the use of boo-hooin?' keep a stiff upper lip''.
