John Akwhani, of Tanzania, in Mexico, 1968. He fell in the early stages of the marathon. Having bandaged his knee he limped on and on, finishing in last place.Asked why he had persevered, he replied (according to The Times ) "My country did not send me here to start the race, they sent me here to finish it" (Not the words you have but seemingly too close not to be of the same man and incident,)
