People being mean about others

Is there a saying when people slag some off that they do it coz they dont like themselves?? Or any saying about the ex girlfriends of your boyfriend?

i have heard one on the program 8 simple rules which said

if you point your finger at someone 3 point back at you ( or something along those lines)

which i think is like saying you pick faults in people which you subconciously have yourself

There is a saying something like

What belittles them lessens you"

Meaning you slag them off you only make yourself look bad.
