why is abbreviation such a long word

Just got back from pub quiz. Our team won. Having a drink before bed as I would sooner have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.Why is dyslexia hard to spell and why is phonetic spelt that way???????????????

Also why do your feet smell and your nose runs?
Also why, when you send goods by a truck {or lorry) it's called a shipment; but, if you send them by ship, it's called a cargo?
Also why do we say "The fire alarm went off": it didn't go off, it went on...........we can hear it!
