A soap-box was originally just that...a box for holding soap. However, around a hundred years ago, it started to be used to mean a 'platform', as it were, for a speaker to stand on. Then, at Speakers' Corner, for example, people would bring such a box to raise them up above their audience in order to be more visible and easily heard. Most recently, John Major did the same thing.
So, "getting up on your soap-box" meant spouting your political or religious views, whether you were actually on a box or not.
I have never heard of anyone "sitting" on his soap-box.
