In 24a, the clue is "to a high degree". The answer, according to previous posts, is "something rotten". Could someone please explain this? I have checked the Bard and can make no sense of it.

If somethings 'high' it's rotten
'High' as meat etc gone off - 'something rotten'

Thanks, folks. But I reckon this is really stretching it. Especially as the cryptic clue is "a lot of sour milk, eg". I've never heard of liquids going rotten. A thoroughly lousy clue.
