EV 962 Depicting South by Kruger

Proving that they don't need to be too tough to be entertaining. Just enough of a workout to figure out where the spaces went, then a straightforward but pleasing end game. I got 22a early, but I have to say the full meaning of the title didn't hit me till I was almost done. Very clever.

Has DocHH been about? He was not on the thread last week.

it's black i think DocHH - all pigments [additively] make black. - or with light [additively] white, hence the lights are in white [i think].

Bellabee, I quite agree with you about the melding of colours, be they pigments or light colours. I seem to remember as a child colouring a circular cardboard disc with the colours of the rainbow, putting 2 holes through the disc, threading cotton through them, tying the cotton into loop, then getting the disc spinning, and voila a colour change to white.
The hard copy of this weeks Sunday Telegraph gives the definitive answer. It says, "The loop of cells in a T shape gave all the colours of the rainbbow and had to coloured in black. The title referred to the the take it or leave it nature of the customer's choice". The hard copy shows the cells coloured black, but with white letters to demonstrate the actual route of the shading. Anyone who sequestered their children/grandchildren's colouring set to colour in the "T" as a rainbow should immediately compensate them with an increase in pocket money!

i remember my impatience with the drying time of oil paints - every canvas seemed to descend into gloom - thank heavens for acrylics!

Good Morning All. After a frustrating and strange beginniong to the week, have finally managed to apply the brain-cells, very much thanks to the kind hint from bellabee. Have the 22a and (I think) the correct 16 cells. As to the clans, only the most Southerly has declared and I thing that goes in next bar one N of the barrier, I think I have something wrong further N towards the 'equator'.
Also, am i right in thinking the names stay at home in the S as well as revisiting the N?

DD I read the preamble as meaning that the 'clans' should relocate to the other side of the barrier, and the void left would not affect the resulting words which were all real and in Chambers.

I should also have added that the 3 Northern clans are placed in the centre of the grid in alternate lines.

Thank you K am having a problem with the nethermost clan (the only one I have properly identified) as when I remove it from it's S resting place, altho' it fits nicely back in the N providing proper words, the void then left does not allow a proper word/words - well not in my Chambers anyway. Will get back to the shredding and think.

Devadolly, any form of "lateral" thinking is always needed with EV. Have you now also realised the relevance of the title, "dePICTing the south"?

Thought I'd just say 'hi' as I didn't put in an appearance last week - visitors plus the chaos of a conservatory being built. Endless cups of tea to make, dust, noise etc, but it's virtually finished now. Consequently did last week's (after a struggle) at the beginning of this week and now, having completed this week's grid, about to attempt the 'depicting' of the south.
DD have also found myself lured into the garden, with a mixture of delight at new growth, daffodils, apple blossom (oh dear, shades of things to come) and horror as I see the horsetail emerging through the soil and find myself overrun with ground elder. Where did it come from? It wasn't a problem last year, and I didn't spot it this year until it was in full cry in most of the borders. Never mind the EV, north of the border would be good for ground elder - as far north as possible.

Of local interest to me as an inhabitant of regions close to and south of 22 ac. My son walked & wild camped along it ( starting E & home to W) last summer, taking 5 days. I was feeling the onset of hypothermia and had to cry off a similar attempt (W to E) at Easter in about 1982. It can be utterly cold and miserable along the most exposed stretches, but glorious when fine. Didn't enjoy or complete that jaunt, but finished this today, and was entertained and amused, after I'd stopped looking for Riever names.

By the way, Dr. B, I've been meaning to ask; I'm sure they must have crosswords similar to The Listener & EV etc in the States, so which ones would you advise us to look for on-line?

Turast, I walked and camped the middle section with my son a couple of years ago, about 40 miles. It was superb, with my favourite day being the one where it rained all day - you could really imagine the misery of the original users. I thoroughly recommend it, but would (as we did) skip the ends as these are apparantly not as interesting. We started at C******S and finished shortly before C******E.

Hi Christina, no thank you, you keep your ground elder to yourself! Ma-in-Law's garden is infested with the stuff and as she is now 93 and no longer a gardener it has turned into yet another one for me to look after. Have tried everything I can lay my hands on to get rid of it - starting with hours of hand weeding then moving on to - flame thrower (actually paint stripping gun) all the farm sprays like Round-up & Gramoxone, path killing weed killers and it wins every time! Have one last 'bullet' left - the heavy duty selective weed killer that gets rid of nettles and thistles, might just work because of the underground suckers................ If anyone knows how to get rid of it, there are two people who would be for ever in your debt!

Andrew G-S, There is a tumbleweed noxious mix available in Focus which names Ground Elder................................Farm based nasties first then................! have done the digging for two years and every tiny half milimetre left grows into a forest........this is WAR

How gloomy. AND horsetail is equally impervious to weed killers. I am seriously considering shouting a good old-fashioned curse over it - you never know ... and nothing to lose. I shall look out for the stuff in Focus. I tried a glysophate based weed killer on the ground elder and it didn't even look faintly dejected. I fear Andrew G-S is right, but there is so much of it.
