Greetings, tenflags: my comment wasn't intended to be cryptic, just an observation that the second quotation had been used before as a thematic basis. The Inquisitor series runs in the Saturday Independent Magazine, and has been, in my view, at least up to the standards (quality, difficulty, fairness) of the Listener (and the Sunday Telegraph Enigmatic Variations series) over the last twelve months or so - and the editor(s) seem to be making a better job of ensuring that the rubrics are free of both errors and infelicities, although none of them seem to understand that there is more than one type of symmetry. (I have no connection with the Inquisitor save as an occasional solver.)

Blimey, I made hard work of that - despite being aided by one of the bods being a namesake, and therefore having a pretty good idea of the second quotation.

However....completely stuck at 3 down, and wondering how the remaining letters of 1 across can be entered logically. Obviously missing something.

i agree speravi - inquisitor has had a good run of late. this weeks gave me nearly as much trouble as this listener [although tiburon's clueing is a cut above i think] -they tend to be less highbrow though! [as 1173 by lato illustrates pretty well] - conversely, the only 'author' i was absolutely sure about for 'all new' was the popular culture one who didn't feature at all. i thought both quotes totally summed up his output! one negative - what some see as the elegance of this puzzle made the endgame a bit too easy i thought.

Well - I'm still ploughing through this (just got 41a) - but its very slow going but quite satisfying clues so I'll continue. I have the section of the quotation from the misprints - and 2 full quotes do spring to mind, unfortunately they differ by considerably more than one letter.

Oh so close! I have it all but am still puzzled by the first author and how the remaining ambiguities are resolved. It can't be n the same way as the second-at least not with my letters
