i've struggled with this [pretty tough clues generally i found] - now i'm looking for the 8 letters and all i can see is an interesting 7 letter word. if i add the letter at the front it loosely gives me something that relates to one of the 'ways'. if i add the letter on the end it gives me something [when applied to 6dn] that suggests programming/communications and maybe [ v loosely] something you might hunt for today.the other 'way' i just can't tie in to anything! any help out there?

Some difficult solving today, it left me feeling like what needed to be shaded! As far as he other "way" that you are looking for is concerned, you need to ignore the entry length indicator and solve the clue as normal, only then will you find the "way".

hello DocHH, and thankyou. i'm not quite understanding your reference to the other 'way'. i thought i had solved the clues normally and after a bit of root and tip 'surgery' found the entries. the word i've been staring at is clearly the opposite to the way i [and i'm sure, you] feel after this slog! can you say more?

Overall on the harder side, and a nice puzzle. If you look up the 8 letter word (using the letter in the front) you will find that it exactly defines how all 12 clues are modified.

Good evening! Just passing so to speak as the paper is still pristine because No1 niece ans husband here for lunch, extended of course and emails produced a 'do it now' instruction so wandered to AB whilst thinking.
Am now VERY depressed, the word physics has been used.......................... much as I love you scientists, I cannot cope with science! Start thinking of your heavy hints, I suspect I am going to need them.

do not panic devadolly [i did momentarily] - just make sure you latinize your 7 letter discovery into it's 8 letter opposite.

Although, I've completed the grid and have the eight letter word that provides the theme, I still can't justify the entries for 26d and 32d - simply can't see what 'strength' words are omitted.

Don't worry Haggis & Drb, totally out of my depth here, have managed 3 aross clues and the possibility of 4 down clues, am off to throw a rope over a beam in the big barn!
Just as a matter of interest does 15d have any relevence to the compiler?

Have filled in the grid and discovered the link before looking at the thread (agree with dr b, haggis that you're giving too much away, we like to struggle a while) but yet to spot either 7 or 8 letter words, latinised or not. Early days yet, and off to the garden. Will refocus later.

Concentrate on the across clues which do not require alteration and the down ones will fall into place.

Firstly, belated Easter greetings to you all, the weather here has been absolutley glorious, nearly mid-20s°C! The beach has been very busy. Is this the only summer we will get? I haven't been able to contribute since my original post, Herself has been here and demanding both attention and internet access!
Devadolly, is this the same No1 niece for whom you agonised over the baking of a wedding cake? As far as your accusation that i was enigmatic in my original post, my reponse is,MOI! I once had a customer who accused me of being charismatic, he needed disenchanting of that too!
I did find that the first pass through the clues looking for the "gifts" left the grid rather sparsely populated. Shark has certainly ensured you need to work the clues. Like K I worked the across clues first, although it did help with the downs, there were a few instances where I had to resort to proper down solving!
